Beau was an egg from a blue dragon pairing. The egg was stolen by Word, then infused with black draconium. So beau became a blue and black mix. Then, when conner got the egg back, he was fused with a gold bonemark or something similar. What was born was a black draconium dragon with blue background and a higher gold draconium than most dragons. He is not a gold dragon, but he was raised to believe he was, and rose to save artha when the fire broke loose. A forced choosing made by Conner when he chose to burn down his own stable.
Beau's ability to change between forms blue and black/gold comes from the natural ability that the dragons learn over time, and are taught in the academy. (much like the transformation that makes tyranis pax so huge).
He may not be a born gold dragon, or a dragon based on old legend, but he tries his best to fill the role based on what he was raised to think was his destiny.
The creator even went as far as to say that dragons of any color can be stronger than him, especially if they too have started to learn how to transfigure themselves and gather their mag energy. Like Deceptshun for example. It's not the bonemark that makes her great, it's the confidence and energy she gathers that truly makes her great.
What the creator was trying to state was that heros aren't chosen, or manufactured, they are molded by their own decisions, unscripted, and rise when others do not. It was Artha and Beau's choice to rise up that made them heros, not their breeding or ancestry. This is also why Parm was to be the green booster. He rose to the challenge to save others without being forced. Anyone could have been the green booster, but he was the one who had the courage to push himself beyond his limits, and that is what made him the right choice.
