He is Spock's childhood friend and classmate. But he was ashamed of his childhood since he did not stop the other Vulcan children from bullying Spock. When Spock was bullied for the tenth time, things came to a head and they stopped talking to each other until stardate 4307.1 (2268). He appeared sicken too and was sent to Bones. That is when Spock met him again.
He logically says he was afraid he will be targeted too, and they became friends again.
